  137. SYNOPSIS OF ACTIVITY
  138. --------------------
  139.  
  140.              Solar activity was moderate.  A new region has appeared
  141.        at east limb, 7618 (N08E73).  It was responsible for an M2.0/SF
  142.        flare, with associated Type II at 12/0225Z.  The region has
  143.        also produced several C-class flares during the period.
  144.  
  145.        STD: Two Type II sweeps were observed from Region 7618.  The
  146.        first, at 12/0225Z had an estimated shock velocity of 1600
  147.        km/sec.  The second, at 12/2108Z was estimated at 600 km/sec.
  148.        Flaring within this region has been very frequent and fairly
  149.        impulsive.  As one would expect, the region is bright in
  150.        x-rays.  Limb proximity is preventing detailed analysis of the
  151.        region.  A special insert showing the x-ray emissions observed
  152.        by the Japanese Yohkoh x-ray satellite has been appended to
  153.        this report.
  154.  
  155.             Solar activity forecast:  solar activity is expected to be
  156.        low to moderate due to Region 7618.
  157.  
  158.             The geomagnetic field has been at quiet levels for
  159.        the past 24 hours.
  160.  
  161.             Geophysical activity forecast:  the geomagnetic field is
  162.        expected to be quiet to unsettled throughout the period.

  183.             HF propagation conditions were near-normal over all
  184.        regions.  Hiraiso Japan reported a strong short wave fadeout
  185.        (SWF) in conjunction with the M2.0/SF flare between
  186.        approximately 02:22 and 02:46 UTC.  Other areas did not
  187.        experience effects as pronounced as Hiraiso.  Conditions should
  188.        continue near-normal.  There is a high probability for periodic
  189.        short wave fadeouts (SWFs) over the next several days at least.
  190.        Region 7618 appears to be a fairly volatile group at the
  191.        moment.  Most of the SWFs should be fairly brief in nature.

  359. Several people have asked about exam pools of late.
  360.  
  361. The complete exam pool questions (less the pictures) can be ftp'd
  362. from world.std.com.  For example, the General exam questions are
  363. /pub/hamradio/arrl/Server-files/pool-general-1.Z and
  364. pool-general-2.Z.  The UNIX "uncompress" command will convert the
  365. .Z files into readable text.
  366.  
  367. For Macintosh users there are HyperCard stacks (complete with
  368. the pictures) for all the FCC tests.  Check in the directory
  369. /pub/hamradio/mac/theory-and-morse.  For example, the General
  370. exam can be found as General_Ham_Test_.hqx.

  468. I have become the proud owner of a Kenwood TS-820 HF transiever.
  469. I also have a CMOS Super Keyer II.  I need to know how to build
  470. the circuit that will interface the keyer to the radio.  In
  471. the ARRL Handbook they refer to a QST article from Feb. 1990
  472. "Cheap and Easy Control Signal Level Converters".  I am hoping
  473. that someone here could either send me the article or describe
  474. the procedure needed to make they keyer and radio work together.
  475.

  529.      Our Strike Team is comprised of RACES personnel who have
  530. taken extra steps to maximize their abilities and skills. What
  531. extra steps? Fireground safety, public safety radio operation and
  532. agency orientation are a few of the topics covered in training.
  533. Personnel must have served in RACES for at least a year, and be
  534. licensed as Technician or higher for a similar period. They must
  535. show a willingness and ability to serve as a RACES person before
  536. serving on the Strike Team. Membership in the Strike Team is by
  537. no means automatic. It requires a special level of participation,
  538. and members must have shown that they can meet this demand before
  539. they are accepted.
  540.      Strike Team members are normally assigned to other RACES
  541. functions, including operation of stations, EOCs and the
  542. Communications Center. If you belong to a Strike Team you will
  543. still be expected to attend the drills, training and activities
  544. that are part of your normal RACES assignment as well. In the
  545. process, you will be confident that no matter what may happen,
  546. you will be called!

  602. received permission" without having actually read the CC&Rs.  It may
  603. very well be as the original poster states...having erected something
  604. without permission AND having no action taken against it within
  605. 30 days of construction...then the permission is, in essense, automatic.
  606. Again, without the eact wording in the CC&Rs, making such a legal
  607. determination is difficult.  In fact, as I recall, the poster said that
  608. he had reviewed the situation with his attorney, so I'll presume
  609. what was posted about the automatic permission after 30 days is
  610. indeed the case.
